Interview 1
Q: What was your first reaction when you found out the Campus Carry law was being put in place?
A: I was actually scared at first because I didn't really know much about it. I think everyone's initial reaction was just that since it's already easy to get a gun nowadays, everyone is just going to have one on campus.
Q: What were your thoughts about it? Do you think it made a difference?
A: I don't really think it made that big of a difference because you can't even really have it (the gun) on you. I think the fact that you have to be over 21 or a veteran made it easier to deal with because most students in college are 18, 19, 20... But that wasn't my first initial thought, at first it was scary to think about.
Q: Their hope with this law was that if there was an incident of a shooting on campus, a student with a CHL could have the opportunity to stop the shooter. Do you think this was a smart move?
A: It wasn't. I mean I understand why it was being placed, to counter a gunman, but the guns are in the car, what are they going to do run off to their car and then chase down the shooter? So I feel like it wouldn't save that many people as they thought it would.
Q: As a gun owner, how do you truly feel about this law? Would you ever be the one to take your gun on campus?
A: I would not take it to campus because I feel like someone would be afraid of me. A lot of the times officers shoot people because they feel afraid or in danger, but they go through training on what to do in certain situations. Someone like me, with no training, I don't even know how I would handle a situation like that. Anybody can make a mistake with a gun, even officers and veterans, I just don't think I'm capable of taking a responsibility like that.
Q: Do you think the law made you more or less safe?
A: For the most part, it didn't really make me feel any safer because, to me, 21 is still a young age for people to act stupid and reckless. I just think they need to make the process of getting a gun harder so that weapons aren't falling in the hands of the wrong people.
Q: If we flash-backed to a couple years ago would you be the one voting against or for the campus carry law?
A: I would vote against it because some people just aren't prepared or ready and they don't have any type of training. I just don't see a reason why there needs to be guns on campus through students. I understand campus police or security guards, or maybe even teachers, but I feel going through a training process or taking tests would help me feel a little safer knowing how is handling the gun.
Interview 2
Q: What are your thoughts on the campus carry law? Do you think it made a difference?
A: I think concealed carry is a good idea to have on campus. I'm not sure if it's actually made a difference but I like the fact that more good people with guns can fight back.
Q: Do you own a gun? As a gun owner, how do you feel about the law? Would you ever take it to campus, why or why not?
A: I own several guns. I feel like it is a safer environment because it is a strong deterrent. It lets other shooters know there is a chance that they can get shot back. I would take it to campus since I know I have a better chance of surviving if something bad happens.
Q: Their hope with this law was that if there was an incident of a shooting on campus, a student with a CHL could have the opportunity to stop the shooter. Do you think this was a smart move?
A: I feel it is a smart move since really the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one. There is a better chance that a tragedy will be stopped.
Q: Does this law make you feel more or less safe?
A: I definitely feel safer since the people carrying a gun went through a process for it. I'm hoping that will mean more good guys will have guns than bad.
Q: If we flash-backed to a couple years ago would you be the one voting against or for the campus carry law?
A: I would be voting for the CHL since I feel it will make the environment a safer place.
